Dennis Pitter creates handmade and wheel-turned pottery in his Smoky Mountain studio located on Soco Road, Maggie Valley, North Carolina (one mile south of Ghost Town on the way to Cherokee, North Carolina)
Stoneware, Raku, Cystalline are the featured specialties of the shop.

The pottery studio was established in 1983 by Linda and Dennis Pitter after moving up to Maggie Valley, North Carolina form Miami, Florida. Three years later they purchased a second shop located one mile south of "Ghost Town" on Soco Road (U.S. 19 on the way to Cherokee, NC), where it remains till this day.

Linda has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and a master of Science in Education. She was a school teacher in Dade County. Dennis was in the paper hanging and painting trade. After six years as a potter, Linda went back to her first love - teaching. She started at the Cherokee Indian Reservation School where she teaches to this day. Dennis remained the only one making pots.

Over the years Dennis has become a very accomplished and versatile potter, with his work being recognized in a number of published books (ie: "The Craft Heritage Trails of Western North Carolina", "Handcrafted in the Blue Ridge", etc. )

At the present time Dennis is making high-fired stoneware in a variety of glazes and clays. All work is strictly hand-made, either wheel-turned or built by hand. Nothing is slip casted or made from a machine of any kind.

Dennis invites you to come to the pottery shop and studio where you can see the pots in progress as well as the beautiful and functional pottery that is in the retail gallery. We have improved the parking and brightly illuminated the gallery space.
